Tanager softball team ends weekend with win By Parker Knox
Sports Writer A 10-2 victory over Brookings Sunday provided a satisfying conclusion to a five-game weekend for the Vermillion girls��? softball varsity. Earlier in the day a 2-0 lead over Yankton in the sixth inning evaporated when the visitors scored once in the sixth and twice in the seventh to snatch away a 3-2 win.�? On Saturday, Vermillion played three games at a tournament in Lennox, losing to Sioux Falls Roosevelt 6-2, losing to Lennox 3-0 and winning over the Roosevelt JVs 9-0 in five innings. Lizzy Bye struck out 10 as a pitcher and doubled and singled as a hitter in the win over Brookings.�? Molly Lecates also had two hits, Ashley Ouellette doubled, and Kayla Munger, Bri Brinkmann, Jenny Bye and Laura Sappingfield each singled. ��?We had a good weekend of softball, playing some good competition,� coach Lori Jerred commented.�? ��?The girls are hitting better, but we just need to work our defense a little more.� Jerred��?s Tanagers travel to Tea this Sunday while the junior varsity plays in its state tournament in Sioux Falls. Jenny Bye was the tough-luck losing pitcher in the Yankton game.�? She fanned five batters.�? Ouellette went 2-for-3 and drove in both of the Tanager runs.�? Munger was 2-for-3, and Donica Crichton and Lecates each singled. Vermillion played well against the Roosevelt varsity Saturday, Jerred said, but too many runners were stranded.�? Losing pitcher Jenny Bye struck out 11. Crichton had a double and a single in a 2-for-3 game, Lizzy Bye and Munger doubled, and Brinkmann, Jenny Bye and Sappingfield each singled. The Lennox game was a scoreless tie until the sixth inning when a Lennox base hit was followed by a pair of errors, letting in all three Oriole runs.�? Jenny Bye struck out 10 in a losing cause.�? Munger was 2-for-3 at the plate, and Ouellette contributed a single. Lizzy Bye struck out six as winning hurler against the Roosevelt JVs and doubled and singled as a hitter.�? Brinkmann pitched in with a double while Jenny Bye, Crichton and Lecates singled.
