This week in Vermillion High School Golf

This week in Vermillion High School Golf By Joe â??MOJOâ? Reiser It has been a busy week for the Vermillion High School golf team. It all started on Sept. 16 at the Elk Point Country Club with a head-to-head match with Elk Point/Jefferson. Next for our local lads was the EPJ Invite on Sept. 19, followed by the 2008 Boysâ?? Big 8 Conference Meet at the Lenkota Country Club in Lennox on Sept. 24. Letâ??s review the conference match first. The Vermillionairres took the team title by firing a 317. Aaron Steele lead the team with a solid 72 to win medalist honors. Erik Ustad followed with a very respectable 77, which notched second lowest score for the meet. In third was Cole Andre at 83 followed by eighth- grader Jake Hogan at 85. â??I putted well and hit some good shots into the greens to have some chances for birdies,â? said Steele on his performance. Second place in team went to the Madison Bulldogs with a 324. In third place was host school Lennox at 328 and in last place (well â?¦ I didnâ??t have to use LAST but for these guys I will) was West Central with an astronomical score of 330. â??KAWOOSH.â?? ?  The Tanagers start three juniors and an eighth-grader. The last spot is so hard to call that coach Kirk Hogan is having the threesome of junior Patrick Haught, sophomore Zach McDonald and freshman Mitch Nelson have an 18-hole playoff to round out the five-man regional team. â??These guys are all within a stroke of each other, so, we will play nine holes on Wednesday and nine holes on Thursday to decide who makes the final cut,â? said coach Hogan. At the regional tourney (which is held in Harrisburg on Monday Sept. 29 at 10 a.m.) the top three teams advance to the state tourney.?  â??At this stage of the game, things have fallen into place to put ourselves in a good spot coming into the region tourney. Our scores have gotten better and we have become more prepared for the regional competition,â? said the seasoned coach. â??We will play our practice rounds on Sunday and then go out and do our best on Monday.â? If I was clairvoyant I would know who won the playoff â?¦ but alas, I am not and just donâ??t have that information at this point in time.? ? ? ? ?  Back to the EPJ match â?¦ Aaron Steele fired a level par 35 to secure low score for the tenacious Tanagers. Cole Andre was second low with a 37, followed by a pair of 42s from Jake Hogan and Zach McDonald to give the Vermillion team a total of 156 and a 17-stroke victory. The JV Tanagers scored a 203 to 241 victory to wrap up the day.?  On Sept. 19 at the Elk Point CC, the tough Tanager team tied for first with Dakota Valley with duplicate scores of 328. Aaron Steele came in at 77 for a third place finish. Erik Ustad scored an 80 for fifth and Jake Hogan notched an 84 to wind up in 13th. This is a notable win in that the third place team was Sioux Falls Christian who is probably the favorite in the region.?  As a side note, I hope you take a chance to watch these young men stand up and represent our community. They do it with dignity and without ego. They stand tall as they face some very tough golf courses. Try to make it out and support, or at least have a good thought for our fine young golfers. I know I will â?¦ thanks MOJO
