This week in Vermillion High School Golf By Joe â??MOJOâ? Reiser Tuesday, Sept. 9, the Vermillion High School golf team squared off with the Orioles of Lennox in a duel match at The Bluffs in Vermillion. Cole Andre was low man for the Tanagers, shooting a 37 and leading his teammates to a 164 to 174 victory. Next low for Vermillion was Aaron Steele with a 38, followed by Jake Hogen at 44. Erik Ustad posted a 45 and Zach McDonald rounded out the varsity team scores with a 46. The Lennox team was led by Dusty Javers at 39 and T.J. Estensonâ??s 40. Next for the Orioles was Tyler Abbas at 43, Ben Holtz at 52 and Josh Atkins with a 59. The junior varsity match was also won by the Tanagers with a score of 187 to 194. Mitch Nelson fired a 43 and Patrick Haught rolled in a 45 to go along with Owen Korcuskaâ??s 48. Jaren Sorensen had a 51 to finish off the JV scoring. For Lennox, Brett Rippentrop matched Nelsonâ??s 43 with Jordon Walery at 49, Travis Tyler at 51 and Jordon Neemanâ??s 52 sinking the second place finishers. Speaking of second place finishes, that is exactly where the Tanager varsity wound up on Sept. 12 as they hosted the Vermillion Invite at The Bluffs. The Vermillionaires battled mightly as they took on the course and some tough scores from Rainey Reynolds of Sioux Falls Christian and Richard Dunlap of Tea Area. Reynolds fired a 73 for the low round of the Invite followed by Dunlaps 74. A pair of 77s by Aaron Steele and Erik Ustad made the Tanagers into some tough competitors and gained the duo third and fourth place finishes. The second place Redbirds were helped by an 84 from Cole Andre and Jake Hogenâ??s 85 for a 323 which was only five strokes behind the winning Sioux Falls Christian team. Other scores for the varsity six were posted by Zach McDonald at 93 and Mitch Nelson at 95. And for the people who were wondering, the WC flushers were a distant sixth in team at 350. Rah Rah for our home town youth. Way to step up and defend your home turf. Next action for the lads of the links was Sept. 16 in a duel with Elk Point/Jefferson at the Elk Point Country Club. The Tanagers will return to that course to participate in the EPJ Invite on Sept. 19. On Sept. 23, the Big 8 Conference match will be held in Lennox and the regions tourney will be held Sept. 29 in Harrisburg. The weather is suppose to be very nice so please get out and support the Tanager team in their quest for low scores and below par rounds. Rah Rah for the Home Team. Thanks a billion â?¦ (it doesnâ??t seem like a million is enough these days) â?¦ MOJO.
