This week in Vermillion High School Golf

This week in Vermillion High School Golf By Joe â??MOJOâ? Reiser Hello readers. I will attempt to report some of the activities of the Vermillion High School golf team each week. Mind you that I sometimes get a few messed up facts and I am altogether too human â?¦ which is to say that I do make some mistakes, so please bear with me. As I have come to understand it, the golf season is broken down into fall and spring seasons. In the fall we get a solid dose of boys and in the spring we get to follow the girls. The South Dakota High School Activities Association schedule has been released. The Vermillion boys â??schedule looks like this â?? Aug. 18 at Hartford for the West Central invite. Aug. 19 at The Bluffs in Vermillion for a duel with Beresford, Aug. 20 at Two Rivers in North Sioux for the Dakota Valley Invite, Aug. 26 at the Bluffs for a duel meet with Dakota Valley and wrapping up August with an invite at Sioux Falls Christian on Aug. 28 which was played at Baker Crossing. In September the Tanager boys will represent their school and community with gusto and fervor. On Sept. 2 at Spring Creek for the Harrisburg Invite, Sept. 5 in Yankton for a duel meet. I believe that match is at Fox Run. On Sept. 9 Lennox visits The Bluffs and on Sept. 12 Vermillion hosts the Vermillion Invite, also at The Bluffs. The boys hit the road to Elk Point on Sept. 16 for the EPJ duel and on Sept. 19 for the EPJ Invite. The Big 8 Conference Tourney is held on Sept. 23 at Lennox with the Regions to be played in Harrisburg at Spring Creek on Sept. 29. The State Tourney is in Hot Springs on Oct. 6-7. And we will be here to assist the readers who donâ??t get a chance to get out to the courses and cheer on our boys, in what should be a very exciting season. On Aug. 18 the Tanager starting five were at Hartford for the West Central â?¦ (uh â?¦ boo â?¦ WC is a big rival and in Germany WC stands for water closet which is to say the biffy) Invite. The Sioux Falls Christian team posted a 323 to win the team event. Chamberlain was second with 331 and Vermillion was third with a 334. Now this is seen as a resounding victory as our five bested the â?¦ uh â?¦ WC five who finished a distant fourth. Vermillion was lead by Cole Andre who posted an 80 to tie for sixth place individually. Eric Ustad carded an 81 to tie for eighth. Aaron Steele helped out with an 85 and Jake Hogen chipped in with an 88. Zach McDonald was next for the Tanagers with a 109. Rainey Renolds of Sioux Falls Christian posted a 76 to top all scorers. In all, 14 teams participated in the event and our boys opened the season with a fine showing and a two stroke drubbing of the WC Biffy team. Next was a clash with the Beresford bunch for a duel at The Bluffs on Aug. 19. Both the varsity five and the JV 11 came out on top of our competitors from the north. Aaron Steele posted a 37 to take top honors for lowest score. Eric Ustad and Jake Hogen carded 39s to tie for second. Cole Andre followed with a 41 and Zach McDonald tossed in a 43 for good measure as the Tanagers whipped the Watchdogs 156 to 179. On the JV side of things Mitch Nelson had a 49 followed by a pair of 51s from Patrick Haught and Greg Styles. Jaron Sorensen rounded out the scoring for the JV Tanagers with a 53. The JV loaded up their first victory 204 to 224 for the Watchpuppies. The next action for the Tanagers was at Two Rivers in North Sioux for the Dakota Valley Invite on Aug. 20. Taylor White of Dakota Valley had his game on white hot as he carded a blistering 68 to crush the field and propel his team to the home course victory. The Vermillion five were lead by Cole Andre with an 82 and Eric Ustad with an 83. Aaron Steele was next with an 85 followed by Jake Hogenâ??s 94 and Zach McDonaldâ??s 98. Over all the varsity finished in sixth place just ahead of the WC Biffs â?¦ uh â?¦ we actually tied but our team is listed above them so â?¦ hoorah for the Tanagers. In JV action Patrick Haught posted an 89 to finish in fourth place. Mitch Nelson carded a 94 with Greg Styles adding a 102 and Jaron Sorensen chipping in with a 110. The JVs also topped the WC JVs finishing fifth to the WC seventh place finish. On Aug. 26 at The Bluffs the Tanagers would flex their muscles and gain a victory over the Dakota Valley squad by dealing the southern foes a 171 to 174 loss. Aaron Steele gained honors as low man with a 40. Eric Ustad and Cole Andre tied for second with a pair of 41s followed by Jake Hogen at 49 and Zach McDonald with a 57. For Dakota Valley Taylor White had a 42.? The JVs did not fair as well as Dakota Valley topped the junior Tanagers 182 to 211. For Vermillion Mitch Nelson carded a 45 and some how I have miss placed the other scores. On Aug. 28 the Vermillion five were at Bakers Crossing for the Sioux Falls Christian Charge Invite. The Tanagers finished in fourth place lead by Aaron Steele and Cole Andre who carded 79s for the seventh low score of the invite. Next at 80 was Eric Ustad in 11th. Jake Hogen fired in a 90 with Mitch Nelson carding a 93 for the varsity. Richard Dunlap of Tea was low man for the day with a 74. His team finished in fifth just behind the Vermillionairs. Well folks this concludes my first installment in support of our future golfers. All the WC people will probably be angry at me for the tongue in cheek abuse â?¦ but I mean no harm. So to all of you, please smile and go out and support our youthful golfers. We have a solid team and they take on the Spring Creek course on Sept. 2 and follow that with a trip to Yankton on Sept. 5. Our young studs return to The Bluffs for a duel with Lennox on Sept. 9 and stay at home for the Vermillion Invite on Sept. 12. Thatâ??s a great chance to get out and support our team. See you on the course â?¦ MOJO
