USD soccer wins 4-3 in double overtime Sarah Halbach?s goal at the 107-minute mark in the second overtime lifted The University of South Dakota women?s soccer team to a 4-3, come-from-behind win over Southwest Minnesota State Wednesday at the USD Soccer Field. Halbach (F, Sr., St. Paul, MN) scored her second goal of the contest as time was winding down in the second overtime to give their Coyotes (1-2) their first win under first-year coach Marcia Oliveira. SMSU jumped to an early 3-0 lead, keyed by two goals by Kelly Fitzgerald, but USD battled back from that three-goal deficit in the first half to cut the Mustang lead to 3-2 after the opening 45 minutes. Sami Spokas (MF, Fr., Aurora, CO) and Halbach scored the first-half goals for USD, while Ashley Oswald (MF, Fr., Sioux Falls) and Taylor Gray (F, So., Des Moines, IA) added assists. Halbach?s goal was on a penalty kick. In the second half, USD tied the game at 3-3 at the 83-minute mark after Katie Quinones scored on a penalty kick. Neither team was able to score during the rest of regulation, leaving the score deadlocked at 3-3 and forcing an overtime. The first 10-minute overtime period was scoreless, and it stayed that way until Halbach?s second goal broke the tie and gave the Coyotes their first victory of 2008. Jennifer Ogren (GK, So., Raymore, MO) provided more than 82 minutes of scoreless play in net for the Coyotes, recording two saves. USD had a 13-6 advantage in shots on goal and a 24-11 edge in shots overall in the victory.
