Annual Relay For Life planning begins The American Cancer Society estimates that one of every three people will be diagnosed with cancer during their lifetime. ?Let?s Take a Holiday from Cancer is the hopeful theme for the 2009 Clay County/USD Relay For Life, planned Sunday, Jan. 25, 2009 from noon to 6 p.m. at the DakotaDome. Two local organizations will sponsor the event, the USD Chapter of Colleges Against Cancer, and the Clay County Chapter of the American Cancer Society. The annual event is gearing up and volunteers, donations of food and supplies and participants are needed. Students, USD staff and community members are challenged to form teams of up to 15 people who will walk around the indoor track during the event. Each team member donates $10 to participate and raises money from family, friends and colleagues, as well. Teams will have a ?campsite that they can decorate at the dome and use to take a breather. Teams can even win prizes. These are several ways to volunteer, donate or form a team: USD event co-chair Heather McClintock, 605-728-5041; www.relayforlife .org/USD; Community contact Wess Pravecek, 605-624-5352 or 605-677-8701. Reminder: October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. In South Dakota this year, an estimated 510 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and an estimated 100 women will die from breast cancer. You can find extensive resources about prevention, early diagnosis, treatment and more at the American Cancer Society?s Web site, www.cancer .org. ?Resources, information on all kinds of cancer, help for patients, research grants and more are provided through the donations of people in Clay County and across America, said Wess Pravecek, who will help lead the team recruitment and corporate sponsorship duties for the Relay. ?That?s why the Relay For Life is important. Put it on your calendar now.
