Tanager boys earn soccer tourney berth By Parker Knox
Sports Writer By Parker Knox Sports Writer One in and one out. Those were the results of Vermillion?s varsity soccer teams? trip to northeastern South Dakota last weekend.? Both hanging on the brink of state tournament qualification when the weekend began, one Tanager team made it in to the state Toyota Cup, now going on in Aberdeen, and the other didn?t. The boys? varsity, though losing to Groton, 2-1, Saturday, won the night before at Mitchell Christian, 4-0, and squeaked into the state tourney field as the eighth seed.? The Tanagers and Hot Springs, in fact, tied for the eighth and last qualifying spot, but by virtue of a head-to-head victory over the Bison in August, Vermillion got the nod. What they earned for their efforts, however, was a Thursday first-round match-up with top-seeded, undefeated Sioux Falls Christian. Other pairings were Sturgis vs. Huron, Freeman Academy vs. Harrisburg and Custer vs. James Valley? Christian. The tournament ends Saturday. Updated? scores and pairings can be found at www.southdakotasoccer.org. The Tanager girls made the long trip to Groton Saturday and lost by a 3-0 score.? They thus finished ninth in the power-points scoring system, one slot out of qualifying for the state tourney. Ending the season with an 0-6-2 record, the Tanagers, had they been able to win just one of their games, would have made it into state. The girls? state tourney pairings for Thursday?s openers were St.? Thomas More vs. Sturgis, Belle Fourche vs. Groton, Huron vs. Sioux Falls Christian and West Central vs. Harrisburg.
