Tanagers? tennis team find success at state By Parker Knox
Sports Writer Quality match experience on South Dakota?s biggest tennis stage gives Coach Dan Hanson and his Vermillion High tennis team reason to look forward to next fall. The Tanagers competed in the state tournament in Rapid City last weekend, played some of their best tennis of the season and had success, winning four matches. ?The tourney went pretty well for us, Hanson said Monday.? ?Besides the cold and wind on Thursday and having to move the tourney indoors the rest of the time, it was in my eyes a huge success. Vermillion players reached the second round of the championship bracket in two singles flights and one doubles flight. Unfortunately those two singles players next ran into the top-seeded eventual state champion players from O?Gorman, and the doubles duo had to face a second-seeded couple from Lincoln. ?We ended up beating four other teams, which was pretty good, I thought, Hanson observed.? ?With everyone back next year, we look forward to doing even better next fall. In Flight 4 singles, Kayla Munger won her opening match against a Huron opponent, then after losing to the top seed, came back to win another match over a Todd County foe. In Flight 6 singles, Chrisy Sorenson, who had a first-round bye, was the other Tanager who had the misfortune to draw O?Gorman?s top seed in the next round. Claire Jones, Vermillion?s Flight 1 player, was the other Tanager singles player to win at least one match in Rapid City. On the doubles side, Jones and partner Valerie Robinson, playing Flight 1 doubles, won their opening match over a Spearfish team before running into Lincoln. Vermillion?s results: Flight 1 singles: Claire Jones lost to Lorenzen, Mitchell, 6-3, 6-3; defeated Jackson, Todd County, 10-1; lost to Foster, Huron, 10-0.
