This Week in VHS Golf By: Joe "MOJO" Reiser Tanager golfers headed for state tourney The Vermillion Tanager High School boys golf team has qualified for the South Dakota High School Golf Tourney via a second place finish in the Region 2A SDHSAA Golf Tourney. The tournament was held at Spring Creek Country Club near Harrisburg on Monday Sept. 29. Familiar foe, Sioux Falls Christian, was once again the top finisher in team with a score of 319. In second place was â??The Fearless Five-someâ? of Vermillion. Leading the way for our local heroes was Cole Andre with a 78, followed by a 79 from Aaron Steele. Erik Ustad posted an 82 â?¦ nanananaaaa and Jake Hogen rounded out the top four scores with an 85 to give the local lads a team score of 324. (I have been misspelling Jake's name from day one so today I attempt to correct that error.) Zach McDonald won the three-man playoff last week and solidified his spot on the starting five. Zach pitched in with a 103 for the Tanagers. Rumor has it that Zach was burning up the course but ran into a little trouble with an assistant to the assistant greens keeper â?¦ (Karl Spackler) who wouldn't stop talking about chinch bugs, manganese and gophers. Back to golf â?? coach Kirk Hogen offered this observation. â??At the beginning of the season if we had been asked if second in the Region was acceptable we would have taken that. All these kids wanted was a chance to compete at the State level and now we have to do our best and see what happens next. â??When you think about it there is only a stroke and a quarter per golfer separating us from Sioux Falls Christian. If there were seedings Sioux Falls Christian's top golfer Rainey Reynolds would probably be number one and his team would probably be the top seed in team.â? Reynolds was the medalist with a solid 72 followed by a 77 from Tea Areaâ??s Richard Dunlap with Cole Andre in third at 78 and Aaron Steele tied for fourth at 79. That is the difference between a good bounce and a maybe a sweet kick here and there.? The Vermillionaires leave this side of the state for Hot Springs on the weekend. Practice rounds will be played on Sunday with the state tourney to be played on Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 6 and 7. Letâ??s all keep a good thought and hope some of those little hops and kicks go the way of our â??Ferocious Fiveâ? and their top notch mentor as they take on the rest of the best that South Dakota has to offer in Class A high school golf.
