United Way The American Red Cross is a humanitarian organization led by volunteers and guided by its congressional charter and the Fundamental Principles of the International Red Cross Movement. It will provide relief to victims of disasters and help people prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies.? The organization has been active for 91 years. United Way funds are used for disaster relief and military service? requests that occur in Clay County.? The funds help to pay for response and training for local Clay county volunteer training. The American Red Cross has responded to several fires each year within the county and depending on the fire, will put the victims in local hotels for several days, provide them food, clothing if all clothes had been destroyed, comfort kits, prescription medicine, eyewear, etc. Disaster mental health counseling is also provided to victims when the need is there. All of these expenses are free to the victims. Red Cross additionally prepares and responds to all disasters in Clay County. United Way funds also help to provide emergency communications to military members, anywhere in the world, when a dependent from Clay County contacts the Red Cross. The emergency is typically a birth, death or serious illness. The Red Cross personnel continue to meet with emergency responders, county emergency managers, law enforcement, etc., so they know of the services and programs it can provide. Working with the Red Cross office, the United Way of Vermillion can reinforce that communication and how Red Cross can help in times of a disaster or military emergencies.
