Chowan for first win The University of South Dakota menâ�?�?s basketball team had four players score in double figures in a 92-58 win over Chowan University Friday, Nov. 21 at the Pepsi Tip-Off Classic in Mankato, MN. It marked the Coyotesâ�?�? first win of the 2008-09 campaign. USD (1-2) was led by a career-high 19 points by John Kreklow (So., Blaine, MN). Kreklow was 5-of-7 from the field, including 3-of-5 from three-point range, to go with a perfect 6-for-6 effort from the free-throw line. The Coyotes also had three other players reach double figures. Steve Smith (Sr., Sioux Falls) had a season-high 18 points, while Dylan Grimsley (Sr., Sioux City, IA) added 17. Louie Krogman (Fr., White River, SD) added 16 points for his third straight game in double figures. Krogman was 4-for-8 from three-point range. Tyler Cain recorded his second straight double-digit rebounding game as he pulled down 11 boards. Krogman and Grimsley had six each. The Coyotes built a 26-14 first-half lead with a 17-6 run in the first half midway through the first half. That USD spurt included seven points from Kreklow, five from Smith, three from Mitch Begeman (Sr., Sioux Falls) and two from Rane Mergen (Sr., Dell Rapids). Chowan cut the lead back to 32-27 with 3:44 left in the first half before the Coyotes ended the half with a decisive 14-2 run, which was capped off by back-to-back three-pointers by Kreklow and Krogman. That gave USD a 46-29 lead going into the break. USD pulled away in the second half, extending its lead to as many as 37 as it rolled to the win. Begeman had nine points and Cain eight for USD. Mergen had five points off the bench. Kreklow, Krogman and Cain had four assists each. The Coyotes shot 50 percent (31-of-62) from the field and 86.4 percent (19-of-22) from the free-throw line. USD had a 44-38 edge in rebounds.
