Harvest festival, soup dinner planned at Bergen Lutheran Nov. 16 The Gayville and Bergen Lutheran Churches along with the Gayville United Methodist Church will be holding a joint worship service at Bergen Lutheran Church on Sunday, Nov. 16 at 10 a.m. Following the service there will be a soup dinner serving from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. sponsored by the Gayville/Bergen Parish Nurse Program. A free will donation will be taken for the soup dinner to help raise money for various projects that the program will offer. A lap/baby size quilt will also be raffled during the dinner. The church is located at the corner of Bergen Avenue and Timber Road near Meckling. The congregations are blessed to have Jamie Lineberry volunteer her services as the parish nurse for the Bergen and Gayville churches. A parish nurse is an integrator of faith and health, reminding people to care for their body, mind and spirit; a health educator-encouraging the understanding to the connection of attitude, faith and wellbeing; a personal health counselor-discussing health problems with parishoners, giving clarity and support; a referral agent and advocate-assisting with the network of the health care system, making referrals when necessary; and a trainer of volunteers and developer of small groups to assist the churches with this ministry. Some of the services that the parish nurse and the health cabinet can provide are: programs to promote healthy exercise and nutrition, education on health issues, health screenings, and assistance to new parents, and support for hospitalized or homebound family members, support groups, and educations on health issues. There is a health cabinet of volunteers that is assisting Jamie in organizing the program, the services that are currently being offered, and future services, projects and events. Currently blood pressure screenings are taking place monthly, coordination of rides for appointments and assistance for the home bound in other ways is being offered. Some future activities being planned are workshops, including the Five Wishes Program, exercise classes at Bergen, blood sugar screenings, and coordination of a resource directory.
