Military Appreciation Day Nov.8
Coyote football to honor service members VERMILLION, S.D. – Military personnel and their families will be honored during Military Appreciation Day at USD's home football game vs. Southern Oregon on Nov. 8. Several activities honoring the military are planned for Saturday's game, which begins with a 2 p.m. kickoff at the DakotaDome, including the distribution of free mini flags to the first 4,000 fans and free camouflage face paint. USD students attending the game can win free tuition for a semester, however, only students wearing camouflage will be eligible. Fans can unite their support for the Coyotes and the military by purchasing special edition camouflaged-designed "Game Day" T-shirts at Barnes & Noble Bookstore on the USD campus and the Dakota Textbook Company, which is located at 440 E. Cherry St. in Vermillion. Available now, the T-shirts were made possible through the efforts of The University of South Dakota, The Licensing Resource Group, Inc., and GEAR FOR SPORTS. A portion of the proceeds from the T-shirts will be donated to the USD Veterans Club. (T-shirt image is available for view at www.usd.edu/urelations/images/proud_military.pdf). "This is a unique opportunity for students and fans of USD to show their support for military personnel and veterans who have given their time, their lives to our country," said LeighAnn Dunn, president of the USD Veterans Club. "It's also a great way for us to promote awareness of veterans and their families as we approach Veterans Day." Additional Military Appreciation Day activities include a military medley by the USD Marching Band, a halftime ceremony honoring service men and women, and the induction of Ed Meierkort, head football coach at The U, as an honorary member of the South Dakota National Guard. There will also be free admission for all military personnel while their family members attending the game will receive a half price discount. The Community Blood Bank, official supplier of the VA hospital, will be at the game taking blood donations.
