welcome holiday Clubs and Organizations Women of the ELCA welcomed the holiday season with their Christmas salad luncheon on Wednesday, Dec. 3, at noon in the Fellowship Hall at Trinity Lutheran Church. Esther Knutson, president, greeted members and guests and thanked the luncheon committee, chaired by Shirley Huber and Marjorie Iverson. She thanked David Olson, local jazz pianist, for again playing Christmas music before and after the annual luncheon; the audience showed him their appreciation with applause. Following tradition, Mrs. Knutson read the Christmas story as it is recorded in the Gospel according to St. Luke and offered prayer before the committee. Jan Olson, a member of the luncheon committee, gave directions for service at the buffet. The Vermillion High School Chorus presented a program of Christmas  carols and other songs of the season. Trisha Fisher directed the choir, and Christy Kimball provided piano accompaniment. Before the luncheon, Women of the ELCA met at 10 a.m. in Askeland Lounge for the December Bible study found in Lutheran Woman Today and led by Pastor Ed Anderson.  "Daniel: Keeping the Faith," is the fourth in the nine-season series entitled  "The Hidden Hand of God: Wisdom Stories from Ruth, Daniel and Esther." After the Bible study, Mrs. Knutson presided at a business meeting at 11 a.m. Members decided upon monetary Christmas gifts for the Luther Center Ministry, Prison Congregations of America, Trinity's YouthQuake, the Vermillion Coalition Against Domestic Violence, and St. Dysmas of South Dakota. In honor of Pastor Ed Anderson and the church staff, Women of the ELCA sponsored Trinity's radio broadcast on Sunday, Dec. 14. Copies of a revised Constitution for Trinity's Women of the ELCA were distributed. Action upon the document will be taken  at a general meeting in 2009. Esther Knutson and Judy Lofgren, Mission Action chair, are retiring as officers on the unit board. The following women will begin their service as officers on Jan. 1, 2009: Cyndie Madsen, president; Ruth Ann Slagle, vice-president; Esther Girard, secretary; Rose Henze, treasurer; Robin Iverson, Mission Action chair; Pat Meyers, Mission Community Chair; and Mylynn Hanson, Mission Growth Chair. WELCA's annual Stone Soup Supper, a free meal for the Vermillion community, will be held Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2009, from 5 to 7 p.m.
