Fourth grade Vermillion boys open the Siouxland Y League with victory A strong second half powered the Vermillion 4th grade boys' basketball team to a lopsided 31-7 victory over a Sioux City 4th grade team coached by Bob Padmore in its first league game in the Siouxland Y basketball league. Sam Jensen and Kyle Johnson led the team in scoring with 11 and 10 points respectively. The Vermillion cagers led the December 13 game at Covington Elementary School gym, South Sioux City, NE, at the half 12-6. They opened up a big lead in the third period with a balanced scoring attack and strong defense. Playing for Vermillion were Max Askew, Tyler Avis, Sam Jensen, Kyle Johnson, Riley Peters, Zeke Robinson, Logan Peterson, Nicholas Svendsen and Braiden Tucker. The team is coached by Heath Johnson and assisted by Kevin Jensen. A snowstorm cancelled the Dec. 20 Siouxland Y league games. The team will next be in action in a non-league contest with Akron on Sunday, Jan. 4 at the Vermillion Armory at 1:30 p.m. The team resumes play in the Siouxland Y league on Jan. 10 at 9 a.m. at the Covington Elementary School gym. In addition, the Vermillion recreational basketball league starts play at the DakotaDome on the morning of Saturday, Jan. 3, with four 3rd & 4th grade boys teams competing.
