for military service Navy Lt. Anne M. Lopez, a 1978 graduate of Vermillion High School, Vermillion, was recently awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal while assigned to Marine Wing Support Squadron 172, Marine Wing Support Group 37, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing (Forward), Marine Corps Air Station Futenma, Okinawa, Japan, following a deployment to Iraq. While deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, Lopez trained and supervised two medical officers and 32 hospital corpsmen while providing routine and emergency medical service to more than 15, 000 service members and civilians. She facilitated the medical coverage for more than 115 missions throughout the area of operations, including four enduring sites, and acted as the primary caregiver for more than 100 Iraqi women and children. She also provided medical care for more than 1, 750 patient encounters while serving both the Al Asad flight line and Thompson Medical Clinic. Lopez joined the Navy in December 1980.
