Graceland at home The University of South Dakota men's basketball team made a victorious 2008-09 home debut on Tuesday night, Nov. 25, with a 78-66 win over Graceland University at the DakotaDome in Vermillion. The Coyotes improved to 20-1 in home openers under Coach Dave Boots, and improved to 2-3 on the season with the double-digit win. The Coyotes had four players score in double figures and had two players record double-doubles in the victory. Jesse Becker (Sr., Plymouth, MN) led the Coyotes with 24 points, with 13 of those coming in the second half. Tyler Cain (Jr., Rochester, MN) added 15 points and 11 rebounds for his second straight double-double, while Steve Smith (Sr., Sioux Falls) added 14 points and a career-high 13 rebounds. Louie Krogman (Fr., White River) added 11 points for USD. The Coyotes shot 40.6 percent from the field but managed to hit only 8-of-27 shots from three-point range. However, USD had a decisive edge at the free-throw line, hitting 18-of-24 shots, compared to 5-of-6 for Graceland (2-7). The game was tied at 20-20 with 8:32 to go in the first half before USD took the lead for good with an 8-0 run, which included three-pointers by Becker and Krogman. The Coyote lead stood at 38-30 at halftime. In the second half, Graceland was within 42-35 with 17:35 left before USD went on a 14-4 spurt to build a 56-39 lead with 13:24 left. Smith and Cain combined for 11 points during that run that helped the Coyotes pull away. Graceland got no closer than 10 the rest of the way. USD had a 41-31 edge in rebounds, including 13-4 on the offensive glass. Cain led USD with six assists, followed by four for Becker and three for Krogman. Becker had three steals while Krogman, Dylan Grimsley (Sr., Sioux City, IA) had two each. Cain added three blocked shots.
