Despite losses, Tanagers competitive on the court

Despite losses, Tanagers competitive on the court By Parker Knox
Sports Writer Vermillion's boys basketball varsity faced a pair of unbeaten teams back to back Thursday and Friday and gave both of them respectable battles before falling to West Central, 55-48, and to Parkston, 55-45. Coach Jay Drake's Tanagers will be home Friday against Lennox with the varsity game tipping off about 8 p.m.  Then they go to Elk Point-Jefferson on Tuesday for a girls-boys doubleheader. "We were proud of the effort the kids gave," Drake said of the West Central contest. Down by 13 going into the fourth quarter, Vermillion rallied to within six at 50-44 and had a chance to cut the gap more. Cole Andre's fourth three-pointer of the second half lifted the Tanagers to within 53-48 with 23 seconds left, but the Trojans held on for the win. "We were really happy about the team even though it was a loss," Drake said. "It was a solid team effort by nine guys." Andre had 12 points, Kylen Freidel 10, Kyle Nemec eight and Blaine Olson six to lead the VHS offense.  Nemec and Freidel led rebounders with four apiece, and Freidel also had four assists and a pair of steals. Against Parkston it was again Freidel who was called upon to apply defense to the opponent's principal intimidator. David Maxwell got his usual 14 rebounds, but Freidel held him down to only five points. "The good thing about our team is that in these games against top teams they are still playing with passion," Drake commented. "We want to continue to have a chance in the fourth quarter versus these teams, and we want to continue to get better and be ready at tournament time." Vermillion outscored Parkston 10-7 in the second quarter to pull to within nine at the half, 27-18. The Trojans dominated throughout but couldn't put away the pesky Tanagers. A three-pointer by Tyler Johnson with 4:05 left made it only 43-38, and another Johnson trey later cut the deficit to 46-42 before Parkston was able to build its lead back up to 10. Olson scored 11 points, Andre nine and Nemec, Freidel and Johnson six each. Freidel had eight boards and Olson six. Parkston cleaned house at the free-throw stripe, sinking 24 of 30 opportunities, while the Tanagers had only seven points at the line.
