North Dakota downs Coyote women, 75-59 Josey Bergan and Kayla Baagason each scored 15 points to lead the University of North Dakota to a 75-59 win over The University of South Dakota women��?s basketball team Saturday afternoon in Grand Forks, ND Ashley Wiemann (Sr., Vermillion) led the Coyotes (12-5) with 16 points. Jasmine Mosley (Jr., Bellevue, NE) added nine, while Annie Roche (RFr., Vermillion) added eight. The loss ended a three-game winning streak against the Sioux for USD. The first half was a seesaw battle with the teams exchanging scoring runs. USD opened the game on a 10-4 run in the first six minutes, keyed by five points from Roche and a three-pointer from Kendra Schomer (So., Madison, Neb.). The Sioux responded with an 8-0 run to take a 12-10 lead, but the Coyotes answered with a 10-0 run of their own, thanks in large part to three-pointers from Wiemann and Natalie Carda (Sr., Beresford) and capped off by a layup by Mosley, to take a 20-12 lead, their largest of the contest, with 9:42 left in the first half. The Sioux ended the half on a big run, however, going on an 18-1 spurt to take a 30-21 lead into the break. Roche led USD with six points in the first half, while Mosley had four. Bridget Yoerger (Sr., Hinton, IA) and Maggie Youngberg (Sr., Yankton) had three rebounds each in the first half, while Yoerger had three assists. The Coyotes shot 47.1 percent from the field in the first half but had 12 turnovers. In the second half, USD��?s offense got rolling early, with Wiemann hitting two three-pointers and Youngberg hitting one, to help the Coyotes climb within 37-34 with 16:15 left. USD was within 48-42 with 10:54 left after a layup by Yoerger but the Sioux pulled away with a decisive 13-4 run to stretch their lead to 15 points (61-46) with 5:55 left. Youngberg and Yoerger had five rebounds each for USD. Yoerger, Roche, Mosley and Young all had four assists. USD shot 44.2 percent (19-of-43) from the field. The Coyotes will get a rematch with UND on at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 31 at the DakotaDome in Vermillion.
