Phyllis Gross Engler Phyllis Gross Engler of Yankton and formerly of Gettysburg, Sioux Falls and Casa Grande, AZ, died Monday Dec. 29, 2008 of natural causes at Sister James Care Center in Yankton at the age of 89 years and three days. The family greeted friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 2, 2009 at Miller Funeral Home, 13th & Main Ave, Sioux Falls. Mass of Christian Burial was said at 11 a.m. Saturday at Christ The King Church, with burial to follow at St. Michael Cemetery. Phyllis Joy Newland was born Dec. 26, 1919 at Gettysburg to Earl and Lois Bacon Newland. She was a 1938 graduate of Gettysburg High School and lived and worked in Gettysburg until her federal career took her to Sioux Falls. On Nov. 21, 1941 she married Francis G. Gross at Sacred Heart Church in Gettysburg. Following her marriage she worked for Montana Dakota Utilities, was deputy treasurer for Potter County, and began her federal employment as executive secretary for the Federal Selective Service System in 1959. She accepted a transfer in 1971 to oversee and ultimately close the Selective Service office in Sioux Falls in 1974. In November of that year she transferred her employment to the Veterans Hospital medical library and worked as a library technician in the medical and patient libraries until her retirement in March of 1984. Phyllis also worked with her husband Francis at their hardware store, the Gettysburg Our Own Hardware. On March 30, 1989 Phyllis married Francis (Frank) Engler who passed away the following year. For a time she also resided in Vermillion. Phyllis was a member of numerous community and career organizations, including the Ralph Lieu Legion Auxiliary and Sacred Heart Alter Society in Gettysburg, DAV Auxiliary and St. Catherine's Alter Society and the Elmwood Women's Golf organization in Sioux Falls. She received numerous honors and awards from the federal government. She avidly played golf for over 50 years and she greatly enjoyed gardening and raising hybrid roses. Phyllis is survived by her son Patrick Gross (Donna) of Vermillion; daughter-in-law Barb Gross of Timber Lake; nine grandchildren; four great-granddaughters and one great-grandson. She is also survived by her brother, Richard E. Newland of Rapid City; and a host of nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husbands Francis G. Gross and Frank Engler; special friend, Jim Ausland; her son,Terrance R. Gross; his twin infant daughters; her parents; one sister, Eleanor Newland Klein; and one brother, Charles L. Newland.
