Take a stand against cancer at Relay for Life The Relay For Life fundraiser for the American Cancer Society will be held Sunday, Jan. 25, from noon to 6 p.m. in the DakotaDome, Vermillion. People may participate by forming a fundraising team. Call 605-Form a 624-5352 or 605-677-8701. People may also raise dollars and come to the Dome on Jan. 25. Did you know that you can take a stand against cancer with the way you go about your daily life? According to the American Cancer Society, some very simple steps can reduce cancer cases and/or deaths. Here are a few: • End tobacco use. In the U.S., the Society estimates that 168,000 people died of tobacco-related cancers in 2007. • Improve diet. • Exercise. • Protect yourself from the sun. • Take advantage of tests and treatments. You can take a stand against cancer by participating at the Relay For Life, too. USD staff and students and people throughout Clay County can help out by raising funds for education, research and help for patients and their families. People throughout the area are busy forming teams and raising money. Several businesses are supporting the relay, too. They include $1,000 level donors Culhane Communications Inc. (KVHT FM 106.3 Classic Hits & Sportsradio 1570 The Ticket), and Wal-Mart of Vermillion; $500 sponsors Broadcaster/Vermillion Plain Talk, Randy Hammer with "HammerTime," Sanford Vermillion, and Vermillion Medical Clinic; $250 sponsor Vermillion Civic Council; and $100 sponsors Vermillion Federal Credit Union and Wells Fargo Bank. Business that want to participate should call Ms. Wess Pravecek at 605-624-5352 or 605-677-8701. The theme for this year's event is "Let's Take a Holiday from Cancer." Teams can compete for first prize by decorating their designated rest areas to reflect a favorite holiday and participants can even dress the part. Here's how you can participate. Community members, students and USD staff are challenged to form teams of up to 15 people who will walk around the indoor track during the event. Each team member donates $10 to participate and raises money from family, friends, aquaintances and colleagues, as well. Each team gets a "campsite" that they can decorate at the Dome and use to take a breather. Prizes are awarded for best campsite, and the team and individual who collect the most in donations. To form a team, volunteer or donate call Chairwoman Wess Pravecek,605-624-5352 or 605-677-8701. In addition, the Relay will sell "luminarias" before and during the event so those who have battled cancer can be honored. For a $5 donation, a decorated white bag will be placed along the track that bears the name of a cancer survivor or someone who died of cancer. The names on all the luminarias will be read during the relay. You may purchase luminarias before the relay at The Nook 'N Cranny, the Civic Council store and the Vermillion Beauty Shop, all in downtown Vermillion; or the Vermillion Federal Credit Union at Dakota and Cherry. Buyers can decorate the bags themselves and return them, or have relay volunteers do the decorations. For more information, contact Luminaria Chair Linda Kogel at 605-624-2667. The 2009 fundraiser is sponsored by the USD Chapter of Colleges Against Cancer, and the Clay County Chapter of the American Cancer Society.
