Tanagers claim
season?s first win By Parker Knox
Sports Writer The Vermillion Tanagers made only 17 of 30 free-throw attempts against Bon Homme on Dec. 30, but the good news is that they sank 14 of them in the fourth quarter, and as a result they claimed their first victory of the season, a 61-57 triumph over the Cavaliers in the third-place game of the Crofton Holiday Tournament. The Tanagers lost to the Norfolk junior varsity, 77-43, the previous day.  Vermillion now stands at 1-4 in the still-young season.  After hosting West Central Thursday, the Tanagers will be home in the nightcap of a girls-boys doubleheader against Parkston Friday and home again against Lennox on Jan. 16. Against Bon Homme the Cavaliers broke away from an 11-11 first-quarter tie to a seven-point lead on the strength of three field goals and seven consecutive points by Jason Rasmussen.  An 11-0 run by Bon Homme, however, returned the Cavaliers to the lead. Vermillion led 39-38 as the final period began, and things immediately turned the Tanagers' way.  Kyle Nemec's two baskets and a steal and subsequent layup by Jordan Robinson lifted Vermillion up by six.  A pair of Kylen Freidel free shots made it 47-39 with 5:07 remaining. Rasmussen's jumper with 3:21 left restored VHS to a seven-point lead at 49-42.  From that point on, all of the Tanagers' points came at the free-throw stripe—five by Blaine Olson, four by Freidel, and one each by Robinson, Tyler Johnson and Erik Ustad. Freidel finished with 12 points, Robinson and Olson 11 each, Nemec 10 and Rasmussen nine to lead Vermillion to its initial win.  Olson and Nemec had six rebounds each and Ustad and Freidel four apiece. The game against Norfolk was still within reach after one period.  Vermillion was down by only 14-10 at that point, but an 11-0 Norfolk run early in the second stanza put VHS into a hole from which they could never climb.  It was 37-23 at halftime and 57-34 after three periods. Olson did all he could to stem the Norfolk tide, scoring 18 points.  Nemec led in cleaning the boards with nine rebounds.
