Tanagers win one, lose one at Crofton tourney By Parker Knox
Sports Writer After two full-week gaps between games in December, Vermillion's Lady Tanagers dive headlong into the busy part of the schedule this weekend, facing three games in five nights starting Friday. The Tanagers, who placed second in the Crofton Holiday Tournament Dec. 29-30 by beating the Norfolk JVs and losing to Crofton, take on Parkston as part of a girls-boys doubleheader at the VHS gym Friday. The VHS girls return to immediate action Monday and Tuesday by playing at Lennox and at home against Madison, respectively. In search of their first win after two early-season defeats, the Tanagers went to Crofton to face Norfolk, but the first quarter was one of which neither team could be proud. But Vermillion got down to business dramatically after a 5-4 first-quarter deficit, outscoring the Nebraskans 22-3 for a 26-8 halftime lead. "Our kids need to learn to bring the effort every night, no matter who our opponent is, if we want to get better as a team," Coach Jamie Parish said. The Tanagers outscored Norfolk 14-12 in the third period and 18-9 in the fourth en route to a 58-29 victory.  Hannah Nehlich-Arobba and Sierra Allen hit double figures with 13 and 10 points, respectively, but there was offensive output from farther down the lineup. Kelly Amundson and Sophie Nehlich-Arobba contributed eight apiece, Ashley Ouellette added six, and Kayla Munger scored five.  Valerie Robinson led the Vermillion rebounding with six. Challenged by facing Crofton's perennial state tournament contender in the championship game, the Tanagers played what Parish called "the best half of basketball we have played in over a year." Hannah Nehlich-Arobba scored Vermillion's first six points, and a rebound shot at the buzzer gave VHS a 14-11 first-quarter lead. A pair of three-pointers by Sara Kjose in the second were part of a 13-point period, sending the Tanagers to intermission with a 27-24 advantage. "Our kids did a nice job of moving the ball and helping each other score," Parish said.  "Defensively they made some nice adjustments and rebounded well out of our zone." Crofton responded with a vengeance in the second half.  Vermillion led 33-30 with three minutes left in the third quarter when Crofton went wild with an 11-0 run.  The Tanagers went totally scoreless for eight minutes, 45 seconds, until only 2:13 remained in the game.  They got back to within nine but ended up losing by a 48-38 count. "In the second half Crofton really pressured our kids on the perimeter and caused us to have some difficulties scoring," Parish observed. "We tried to make some adjustments on the fly but were just unable to get back into a good offensive rhythm. I give Crofton a lot of credit for the defensive effort they put forth in the second half." Sophie Nehlich-Arobba led VHS scoring with 10 points.  Her sister Hannah had seven while Kjose and Munger scored six each.  Munger and Amundson had six boards apiece.
