VHS wrestlers have
interesting week in store By Parker Knox
Sports Writer An interesting week for Vermillion's outstanding wrestling team lies just ahead. On Saturday the Tanagers look to score another high finish in a tournament when they compete at Harrisburg's invitational, which tips off at 10 a.m. Next Thursday the schedule takes the Tanagers to Canton for a dual against the high-flying C-Hawks, starting at 6:30 p.m. Vermillion's only competition last week occurred at Brandon Valley's invitational where the Red and White accumulated 188 points for a solid third-place finish among eight schools. Canton won the team title with 228 points, edging Huron with 227.5. Trailing the Tanagers were Sioux Falls O'Gorman at 151, Brandon Valley at 114, Sioux Falls Roosevelt at 86, Sioux Falls Lincoln at 81 and Kingsbury County at 54 points. T.J. North, the state's top-ranked 112-pounder, remained unbeaten, pushing his individual record to a lofty 18-0. He earned his personal title with a 4-0 decision over Huron's Braden Bingen in his championship match. Andrew Eidem scored Vermillion's other championship, winning the 145-pound crown with a championship pin in 5:48 over Huron's Josh Harvey. Four other Tanagers reached their respective championship matches, and it took Canton and Huron wrestlers to beat them out at the end. Earl Kiertzner placed second at 130 pounds, Chris Mart second at 160, Nick Mart second at 189 and Gerrit Heine second at heavyweight. Lance Burkhart at 125 and J.R. Moore at 135 were third-place wrestlers, and Brad Orr at 152 and Dexter Mehlhaf at 171 brought home fourth-place medals.
