Community Health & Wellness Fair is Saturday Sanford Vermillion Medical Center will host a Community Health and Wellness Fair on Saturday, Feb. 28, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sanford Vermillion is once again partnering with USD SIFE (Students in Free Enterprise) as well as students in Health Professions programs at The University of South Dakota to provide a wide variety of screenings and activities to promote health and wellness awareness. Free health screenings will include blood pressure checks, blood sugar screen, body fat/body mass index analysis, lung/breathing test, Dermascan™ skin damage screening, heel ultrasound — osteoporosis screen, I-Step orthotic foot screen and oral cancer screen. Reduced cost screenings include cholesterol — Total/HDL ratio — $15, PSA Blood screen for men — $20. Community Blood Bank of Sioux Falls mobile unit will be onsite for blood donations. "While hosting this event in the Medical Center last year was very successful, we are extremely excited about our new location this year. The atrium and classroom space in the new Lee School of Medicine building provides a beautiful, open setting. We feel this will more than accommodate our space needs as well as provide a more convenient flow for attendees," comments Mary Merrigan, Director of Public Relations at Sanford Vermillion. This year's theme "Know Your Numbers," focuses on the importance of knowing your individual 'numbers' and understanding what they mean with respect to one's overall health and wellness. Community members will also learn about financial awareness as related to health services. "There is something for everyone – including children. There will be a Children's Fun Room with supervision by the SIFE students. Starburst the clown will be on hand to entertain the kids as well as games, activities and age appropriate health education. It will be a fun and informative day for all," said Merrigan. "Partnering with Sanford has been an incredible experience for me and the other SIFE Students. With a theme of 'Know Your Numbers' we are able to focus on educating the community on both financial literacy and wellness promotion," comments Rachel Svartoien, SIFE '08 Alumni." Area and local vendors will add an array of health information booths. Participants will enjoy heart health snacks, fun giveaways and will have many opportunities to win a variety of prizes. Those in attendance will qualify to win an exciting, health focused grand prize by completing a survey. One lucky winner will receive a Wii Entertainment System with a Wii Fit Program.
