Coyote men roll to big rout of SIU-Edwardsville The University of South Dakota men's basketball team got back in the win column with an impressive 107-73 win over Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville in action Saturday night at the DakotaDome in Vermillion. USD (19-7) improved to 14-0 at the DakotaDome this season, and also avenged an earlier loss to the Cougars (9-17) with Saturday's victory. USD was keyed by a balanced attack Saturday, as seven players scored in double figures. Mitch Begeman (Sr., Sioux Falls) paced the Coyotes with a season-high 19 points. Tyler Cain (Jr., Rochester, MN) added 16 points and nine rebounds, while Louie Krogman (Fr., White River) collected 15 points. Roman Gentry (Jr., Sioux City, IA) added 14 points and nine rebounds for USD, while Jesse Becker (Sr., Plymouth, MN) added 13 points and six assists. Also scoring in double figures for USD was Steve Smith (Sr., Sioux Falls) with 11 points and eight rebounds and Rane Mergen (Sr., Dell Rapids) with 10 points. The Coyotes opened the game quickly on a 21-6 run in the first 6:47 of the contest. Cain had six points in that run, which saw the Coyotes go 9-of-12 from the field. SIUE cut the deficit down to 31-20, but the Coyotes pushed the lead to 23 points with a 16-4 run. USD led 47-24 with 1:44 left after that run and took a 50-29 advantage into halftime. Cain paced USD in the first half with 12 points and five rebounds. Roman Gentry added nine points, five rebounds and four assists, while Steve Smith had seven points and three rebounds. Jesse Becker also had six points and three assists for USD. The Coyotes shot 50 percent (18-of-36) in the first half, compared to 34.3 percent (12-of-35) for SIUE. USD hit 6-of-14 three-pointers (42.9 percent) from field and held a 25-16 edge in rebounds in the opening frame. USD maintained a double-digit lead in the second half and extended the lead to as many as 36 points in the second frame. The Coyotes had a 45-24 edge in bench points and an 18-7 edge in second-chance points. Dylan Grimsley (Sr., Sioux City, IA) added seven points, four assists and two steals for USD. The Coyotes had a 52-29 advantage in rebounds and hit 50.7 percent (35-of-69) from the field, compared to 37.7 percent for SIUE. USD will look to cap off a perfect home season on Saturday, Feb. 28 against Seattle University. Game time is 8 p.m. at the DakotaDome in Vermillion, S.D. Notes: The 107 points scored by USD were a season-high. It was the second time the Coyotes have eclipsed 100 points this season…USD is now 4-4 against Division I foes this season…Begeman's seven rebounds were a season-high.
