Coyotes surge past Northern Iowa, 76-67 The University of South Dakota womenâ�?�?s basketball team recorded its first win over a Division I foe with a 76-67 win over Northern Iowa Tuesday night in Vermillion. It is the Coyotesâ�?�? first win over a Division I program since they made the jump to NCAA Division I competition. USD (14-7) did it with balance, led by Bridget Yoerger (Sr., Hinton, IA), who tied a season-high with 27 points. She added 11 rebounds and a career-high seven assists. Kara Iverson (Jr., Yankton) added a career-high 17 points and three rebounds, while Annie Roche (RFr., Vermillion) and Jasmine Mosley (Jr., Bellevue, NE) added 10 each. USD trailed by one at halftime and by as many as five early in the second half before mounting a comeback. USD took its first lead of the second half at 51-50 on a layup by Mosley, who scored all of her points in the second half. UNI tied the game at 56-56 with 5:32 left with two free throws before Ashley Wiemann (Sr., Vermillion) drained a three to put the Coyotes up, 59-56. The Coyotes never relinquished the lead again, stretching their advantage to 71-64 with 42 seconds left after Mosley converted a three-point play. USD started strong in the first half as it moved out to a 16-11 lead in the first 7:30. Bridget Yoerger had 11 of USDâ�?�?s points during that run.? UNI rebounded to take a 24-18 lead, but the Coyotes fought back late in the half. Annie Roche hit a running layup as time expired to bring USD within 34-33 at halftime. In the first half, the Coyotes were led by Bridget Yoergerâ�?�?s 13 points, while Annie Roche and Kara Iverson had seven each. Maggie Youngberg added six points. The Coyotes shot 48.7 percent (14-of-29) in the first half, including 5-of-8 (62.5 percent) from three-point range. Roche had four assists for USD in the first half. UNI, which had a 16-9 edge in rebounds, was led by Lizzie Boeckâ�?�?s 16 points in the opening frame. In the second half, the Coyotes fought through a deficit and made crucial plays down the stretch to record the big home win. Maggie Youngberg (Sr., Yankton) added seven points for USD. Roche had four assists, while Iverson and Yoerger had two steals each. USD, after struggling mightily shooting the ball Sunday against Wisconsin-Eau Claire, shot 54.9 percent (28-of-51) from the field, including 9-of-15 (60 percent) from three-point range.
