SIU-Edwardsville snaps winning streak Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville ended the 15-game winning streak for The University of South Dakota men?s basketball team on Saturday night, beating the Coyotes, 73-68 in Edwardsville, IL. It was USD?s first loss since a defeat at Notre Dame on Dec. 2. Despite the loss, Coyote forward Dylan Grimsley (Sr., Sioux City, IA) reached a milestone in his career as he pulled down his 500th career rebound in the first half. Grimsley is 18th USD player to reach 1,000 points and 500 rebounds for his career. Jesse Becker (Sr., Plymouth, MN) led USD with 16 points and five assists. Tyler Cain (Jr., Rochester, MN) added 12 points and a game-high 15 rebounds for USD, with Louie Krogman (Fr., White River) adding 12 points and Grimsley collecting 11. SIUE?s defense slowed down the Coyote offense in the second half, forcing 12 USD turnovers and holding the Coyotes to just 28.6 percent shooting (8-of-28). USD (18-6) jumped out to a 16-10 lead, with Becker accounting for eight points. The Cougars (9-15) responded with a 10-2 run to take a 20-18 lead, but that was short-lived as Krogman drained his second three-pointer of the first half to put USD back in front at 21-20 with 11:35 left in the first half. Krogman?s three sparked USD on an 11-0 run that pushed the Coyote advantage to 29-20 with 8:26 left in the first half. Grimsley scored five points in that run, with Mitch Begeman (Sr., Sioux Falls) also converting a three-point play. That 11-0 run was part of a bigger stretch in which USD outscored SIUE 21-4 as it extended its lead to 39-22 after Becker drained a three-pointer with 5:17 left in the first half. The Coyotes started off on a torrid pace from three-point range, hitting 8-of-11 (72.7 percent) of their three-point attempts. USD led 44-34 at halftime and spread the offense around in the first 20 minutes. Becker had 11 points, while Begeman and Krogman had nine each. Grimsley had seven points while Cain had six points and nine rebounds. USD led 51-40 at one point in the second half but SIUE went on a 15-2 run to take a 55-53 lead with 10:57 left. Krogman hit a three to answer to put USD ahead by one, and from there, the game stayed close the rest of the way. SIUE led 68-63 with 3:12 left. USD got within two points twice in the final two minutes but was unable to tie the game. Begeman finished with nine points off the bench for USD. Cain had three blocks.
