Tanager wrestlers celebrate season's end with win By Parker Knox
Sports Writer What Vermillion's wrestlers most wanted as they took to the mats against Sioux Falls Washington in the last home match of the season last Thursday was a night of celebration to mark a sensational season, and a celebration is what it turned out to be. The Tanagers, with their four seniors wrestling in their last-ever dual at the VHS gym all winning, took control early and built a 38-11 lead. Washington rallied to win three of the last four weights to make the final team score a more respectable 44-29 in Vermillion's favor. Vermillion was down 11-6 after the first three classes, the six points coming from the usual suspect—the undefeated T.J. North at 112 pounds, who pinned his Warrior opponent in the second period. From that point on the Tanagers rolled, scoring two decisions, two major decisions and three pins to salt away the victory. "All of our seniors won," said a pleased Coach Joe Delvaux, "and two of them avenged earlier losses to the same Washington opponents." Those two were J.R. Moore at 135 and Jeff Anglin at 140, both of whom scored major decisions. Right behind them were the other two seniors, Andrew Eidem at 145 and Brad Orr at 152, both with pins. Also winning by pin were junior Chris Mart at 160 and sophomore Dexter Mehlhaf at 189. Lance Burkhart and Earl Kiertzner won by decisions at 125 and 130, respectively. "Lance got a big win at 125," Delvaux observed. "He and (Nate) Larson had split in four previous matches. Lance has one of the state's toughest weight classes, and four of the top six in the state are in our region." The Tanagers opened their pursuit of state meet qualifying Thursday night at West Central. The Region 2A meet concludes there at 6 p.m. Friday. The top four placers in each weight class advance to the state tournament in Watertown next Friday and Saturday. Vermillion's lineup for the regional, Delvaux said Saturday, would be: 103, sophomore Joey Mueller; 112, junior North; 119, sophomore Tony Henderson; 125, sophomore Burkhart; 130, junior Kiertzner; 135, senior Moore; 140, senior Anglin; 145, senior Eidem; 152, senior Orr; 160, junior Chris Mart; 171, sophomore Mehlhaf; 189, junior Nick Mart; 215, freshman Will Mart; heavyweight, junior Gerrit Heine.
