Tanagers cruise to third win over Dell Rapids By Parker Knox
Sportswriter It pays to practice free throws and, when given the opportunity to shoot those unguarded shots in game competition, to make them! That lesson came through loud and clear in Dell Rapids last Thursday as Vermillion sank 28 of 36 free-throw chances to offset a six-basket field-goal advantage for the Quarriers. The Tanagers scored their third victory of the season, a 59-47 triumph in which they led all the way. Vermillion also shot 50 percent from the field (13 of 26) while Dell Rapids, though firing the ball at the hoop almost non-stop, misfired more often than not. The Quarriers made only 19 of a whopping 60 field-goal attempts, and from three-point range they made only three of 27 while the Tanagers hit on half of their 10 long-range tries. Cole Andre led seven Tanagers who scored with 20 points, making five-of-eight from the field and all six of his free throws. Kylen Freidel had 14 points, including 10 of 13 from the stripe, as well as six rebounds. Kyle Nemec and Jason Rasmussen had seven rebounds each as the Tanagers fought the Quarriers off the boards to the tune of 29-28. VHS translated a 25-16 halftime lead into a wider comfort zone with 17-point third and fourth quarters. Two nights earlier in Hartford, the Tanagers fell at the bitter end to West Central, 48-43, in a game in which the greatest point spread was five. Keeping the entire contest at the pace which serves them best, the Tanagers limited the Trojansâ?? possessions and thus kept the game where they like it â?? in the 40- and 50-point range. â??Our kids gave another great effort,â? said Coach Jay Drake, â??and whenever they do it, especially on the defensive end, we always have a shot to win.â? An 8-0 West Central run late in the second period and early in the third lifted the Trojans into their first lead of the game just after halftime. The game was then deadlocked at 21, 23, 25, 27, 29 and 31 as the teams fought tooth and nail. Blaine Olson had a fantastic third quarter, scoring nine of his 13 points in that period alone. From a 31-31 tie West Central went ahead by five and never trailed again, but the Tanagers made it interesting. Cole Andre had a lot to do with that, scoring eight of his 11 points in the final stanza until fouling out with 2:17 remaining. Andreâ??s final three-pointer lifted VHS to within 40-39, then the two clubs went more than three minutes without the score changing. The Trojansâ?? last eight points all came on free throws. When West Central went up by 44-39, the Tanagers came back on clutch free throws by Tyler Johnson and Kyle Nemec in the final minute to reach a deficit of only 44-43, but as time was growing short, they had no choice but to foul and send the Trojans to the line. They came through there with four more free shots, extending the final margin to five points. While Freidel, the Tanagersâ?? leading scorer, was held to two points, he nevertheless contributed with five rebounds, four assists and a steal. At the same time his teammates stepped up offensively. Besides Olsonâ??s 13 and Andreâ??s 11, Nemec scored nine and Johnson six. Vermillion plays at the home court of state championship contender Madison Friday night, then finally has a home game after five straight on the road when Dakota Valley comes in for a girls-boys doubleheader next Tuesday.
