Tanner and Jay earn Westminster honors Vermillion?s Tanner Clark and his Shetland Sheepdog, Jay, didn?t win best of show at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show in New York City this week. But as Jay explained during a guest appearance on The Martha Stewart Show Wednesday morning, they received the next best honor they were capable of earning. Tanner showed Stewart the award of merit that Jay received after being scrutinized by the premiere dog judges in the world. Tanner?s mother, Melanee Clark, told the Plain Talk before departing for New York that this week would be bittersweet. Approximately a month ago, Melanee?s husband and Tanner?s father, Tim Clark, was killed in an automobile accident. Tim had planned to show his own dog, a Papillon named Justus, in the show. Naturally, Tanner and? Jay were included in the family?s Westminster plans, too. Tanner and Melanee decided to go ahead and fulfill Tim?s wishes. ?I thought about not doing this, Melanee told the Plain Talk last week. ?But I talked with a psychologist, and his (Tanner?s) teachers and counselors at school, and it was their recommendation that we move forward and Tanner really wanted to move forward, and I know his dad would have wanted him to move forward. ?This is a big deal for Tanner; he?s worked really hard all year to achieve this and I don?t want to disappoint him, she said.
