USD's Smith granted
year of NCAA eligibility Steve Smith, a center on The University of South Dakota men's basketball team, has been granted an additional year of eligibility by the NCAA for the 2009-10 season. Smith (Sioux Falls) received the year of eligibility as a result of the NCAA five-year rule waiver. Smith battled injuries the first two years of his collegiate career which limited him to seven games in two seasons. Smith has started all 25 games for USD in 2008-09. Despite battling through an injury suffered early in the year, he is averaging 8.4 points and 5.3 rebounds per game. He has started 75 games in his USD career. Smith has averaged 9.3 points and 5.2 rebounds a game during his time at USD.
