Coyote softball splits two
at Husky Dome Invitational The University of South Dakota softball team split two games Sunday at the Husky Dome Invitational in St. Cloud, MN. The Coyotes beat Northern State, 4-2 but fell to Minnesota State, Mankato, 9-3. The Coyotes finished 3-1 at the two-day event. In the win over Northern, USD struck for two runs in the first inning. Rachel Fricke (Jr., Monroe, NE) and Dani Bahlmann (Jr., Marshall, MN) had RBI as the Coyotes took advantage of two Northern State errors. In the fifth, Michelle Jones (Jr., Rapid City) drove in a run to put the Coyotes up 3-0. Northern cut the lead to 3-2 in the bottom of the fifth but the Coyotes added an insurance run in the sixth when Tagney Jones (Sr., Lincoln, NE) doubled home Brittany Donohue (Jr., St. Paul, MN), who had doubled to lead off the inning. Jones, Fricke, Alaina Novotny (So., Omaha, NE), Donohue and Lexie Eversley (So., Yankton) each finished with two hits for USD. Cortney Heim (So., Plattsmouth, NE) picked up her second win of the weekend on the mound. She allowed two earned runs and five hits in seven innings. She struck out four and walked two. In the loss to Mankato, the Coyotes fell behind 3-0 after one inning but battled back to tie the game in the second by scoring three times. Alexa Rudeen and Bahlmann had RBI for USD in the inning, which saw the Coyotes take advantage of two Mankato errors. The Mavericks, who are picked to finish second in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference, scored six unanswered runs to pull away. Donohue suffered the loss for USD, giving up eight earned runs in seven innings. She struck out eight and has 22 strikeouts in two outings so far. Donohue led USD's offense with a 2-for-2 effort at the plate. Rudeen, Fricke, Jasey Goedeken (Jr., Columbus, NE), Callie Roan (Jr., Sioux City, IA) and Tagney Jones added hits for the Coyotes, who left eight runners stranded on base. The Coyotes resume action on Saturday, March 7 in Kissimmee, FL against Valparaiso University. Game time is 7 a.m. It is part of 14 games the Coyotes will play over a span of nine days in Florida.
