USD Softball take 2 wins The University of South Dakota softball team earned a 4-3 victory over the University of Pennsylvania and then beat Youngstown State 2-0 in game two. The Coyotes improve to 10-4 overall with the two victories. In game one, USD scored all four runs in the bottom of the fourth. The first run was scored on a wild pitch which allowed Alaina Novoty (So., Omaha, NE) to score as she reached earlier on a walk. Callie Roan (Jr., Sioux City, IA) drove in the second run on a RBI single. The Yotes then scored the third and fourth runs on a Tagney Jones (Sr., Lincoln, NE) single down the left field line. Pennsylvania scored two unearned runs in the fifth inning capitalizing on three USD errors. Penn then added another run in the top of the sixth but South Dakota was able to hang on for the win. Mel Johnson (So., Sioux Falls), earned her first win of the season on the mound as she went 5.1 innings allowing five hits and having two strikeouts. Brittany Donohue, (Jr., St. Paul, MN) earned the save pitching 1.2 innings. USD finished the game with eight hits while Roan, T. Jones and Donohue each had two hits. In game two, USD scored two runs in the top of the fifth for the win. Dani Bahlmann (Jr., Marshall, MN) led off the inning with a single through the right side. An Emily Chvatal (Sr., Malmo, NE) sacrifice bunt advanced her to second. Bahlmann then scored on a Lexi Eversley (So., Yankton) single up the middle. The second run was scored on a Tagney Jones (Sr., Lincoln, NE) single up the middle. Cortney Heim (So. Plattsmouth, NE) earned the win on the mound and improved to 6-1 overall this season. Heim had two strikeouts while allowing just six hits in seven innings. South Dakota finished the game with six total hits while T. Jones and Eversley each had one hit and one RBI. The marks the second victory over Youngstown while at the Rebel Spring Games.
