USD Softball wins two in final day in Florida The University of South Dakota softball team finished the Rebel Spring Games with two wins. USD had 12 hits in the 7-2 victory over Iona College in game one and in the second game, Tagney Jones hit the game winning single in the bottom of the eighth to led USD to a 4-3 victory over St. Peters College. In game one, USD started off scoring two runs in the first inning. The first run was scored by Callie Roan (Jr., Sioux City, IA). Roan reached base on a single and then was able to score on a throwing error by the catcher one play later. The second run of the inning was scored on a Rachel Fricke (Jr., Monroe, NE) RBI single up the middle. The Coyotes went on to score four more runs in the third inning. Tagney Jones (Sr., Lincoln, NE) led off the inning with a single. Two batters later, Alania Novotny (So., Omaha, NE) hit a double to right center. Dani Bahlmann (Jr., Marshall, MN) reached on an error which allowed two runs to cross the plate. The last two runs of the inning were scored on a Jasey Goedeken (Jr., Columbus, NE) single to left field driving in two more runs. In the fourth inning USD added one run to go up 7-0. Alexa Rudeen (Fr., Sioux City, IA) singled through the right side to bring in the run. Iona scored a run in the sixth inning off a solo homer and then added another in the seventh inning.Cortney Heim (So., Plattsmouth, NE) earned the win on the mound pitching a complete game with six strikeouts. South Dakota had 12 hits in the game while Iona had seven total hits. In game two, St. Peters jumped out to an early lead scoring three runs in the top of the second inning. USD however rallied to score three runs in the fifth inning. Lexie Eversley (So., Yankton) hit a three run bomb over the left field fence to drive in the three runs. The home run was hit with two outs. The Coyotes then earned the win in the bottom of the eighth. Michelle Jones (Jr., Rapid City) was placed on second due to the international tie breaker rule and then advanced to third on a Emily Chvatal (Sr., Wahoo, NE) single. T. Jones then hit the winning single through the left side. Heim earned the win on the mound and improved to 9-1 on the season. She pitched 6.1 innings and had four strike outs while allowing just three hits. USD improves to 14-4 overall and finished with a 11-3 record while at the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, FL.
