Vermillion venue to host
USDâ??s Chamber Singers Saturday The University of South Dakota Chamber Singers will present a 7:30 p.m. concert on Saturday, March 21 at United Church of Christ, located at 226 E. Main St., in Vermillion. This performance is part of an annual spring concert tour by the Chamber Singers and their conductor David Holdhusen, Ph.D.  The program features a variety of repertoire that spans the historical spectrum, including pieces by Palestrina and Randall Thompson as well as folk songs and spirituals from throughout the world. The choir will also present a newly composed work by Stephen Yarborough, USD music professor, entitled "In Memoriam," dedicated to his son, Jonathan, who died in a motorcycle accident last year.  According to Holdhusen, the students have worked tirelessly to prepare the program to speak to the audience on a deep musical and emotional level. There is no cost to attend the concert; however, a free will offering will be collected.  The premiere vocal ensemble at The University of South Dakota, the Chamber Singers is comprised of graduate and undergraduate students selected through auditions from the entire university student body.  Its repertoire, which is primarily a cappella, includes music from the Renaissance to the present in a wide variety of styles.  The Chamber Singers have performed for state and regional conventions of the American Choral Directors Association and the Music Educators National Conference. The ensemble also has recorded several choral works for a companion record series to music textbooks used by colleges and universities nationwide.
