2009 Dan Lennon Award recipients to be honored The University of South Dakota track and field program will honor all the volunteer workers who have dedicated many hours and time to the track and field program over the years. All the volunteers received the Dan Lennon Award at the Dan Lennon high school track meet March 30. This year marked the 20th Dan Lennon Award recipient. The Dan Lennon Award was established in 1991 in honor of the former Coyote head track and field coach. Lennon organized the first USD Invitational track meet on April 13, 1949. Lennon is a member of the South Dakota Coyote Sports Hall of Fame. Since the DakotaDome opened in 1979, it has been the home to numerous track and field events. The volunteer workers have been part of the success of these track meets. The volunteers have worked 16 North Central Conference Championships, five Division II National Championships, and the first Division I Great West Conference Championship, which was held in early March. Along with those meets they have also been there when USD has hosted over 100 invitationals and over 80 high school meets. "The Dan Lennon meet has been a wonderful event," said Jack Doyle, former USD athletic director and now a longtime volunteer. "Over the years we have had a tremendous turnout as far as volunteers have been concerned with the meet. There have been so many track meets at the DakotaDome over years and the willingness of so many helping out is one of the reasons the meets are so successful." The impressive list of meets is a lot of work for these people who have volunteered their time over the past 30 years. There have been over 150 different individuals that have volunteered over the years. One of those individuals is Keith Joy of Vermillion. Joy has volunteered for over 25 years. "The reason that I have volunteered over the years is that I really enjoy track," said Joy. "I like watching track and enjoy being around the kids. It is also an honor to be involved with my alma mater, The University of South Dakota." "The track meets at USD certainly could not have been done without the volunteer help from all the people in southeastern South Dakota and surrounding areas over the years," USD head men's track and field coach Dave Gottsleben said. "We are very grateful for the time and effort the volunteers have put in to helping the track and field program." The Dan Lennon Invitational was held in the DakotaDome March 30-31. All the workers were honored on Monday.
