Clay County featured on Johnsonâ??s Web site U.S. Senator Tim Johnson (D-SD) has selected Clay County as his March 2009 "County of the Month."  The county is highlighted in a special section of his Web site at http://johnson.senate.gov. "Clay County has a rich history and wonderful outdoor recreational sites," Johnson said.  "I am proud to call it home and to have helped improve local schools, fund the Lewis and Clark Rural Water Project, provide resources for Spirit Mound and help with many other projects in the area." Clay County was founded in 1862 and is home to the communities of Vermillion, Burbank, Greenfield, Meckling, Westerville, Hub City, and Wakonda, among others. The county also is home to some of the best outdoor areas in South Dakota, including the Clay County Recreation Area and the historic Spirit Mound site, which was visited by Lewis and Clark. Johnson is a strong advocate of homeland security and economic development grant programs that help our small communities continue to grow.  He was proud to secure federal funding for programs in Clay County that continues progress on the Lewis and Clark Rural Water Project, restores Spirit Mound, helps improve local health care, and enhances the Missouri River. "I wanted to highlight one specific county each month to bring attention to our communities," Johnson said.  "South Dakota communities deserve recognition for their accomplishments – they are truly great places."
