Coyotes softball team falls to 21-16 The University of South Dakota softball team dropped a pair of games Friday in Kansas City, MO. The Coyotes fell to North Dakota, 6-5 and the University of Missouri-Kansas City, 7-5 in Friday's action. The Coyotes fell to 21-16 with the two losses. They will face both teams on Saturday, April 11 in Kansas City to wrap up the weekend play. In USD's opening game, North Dakota scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to record a 6-5 win over the Coyotes. USD got on the board in the first inning. With one out, Callie Roan (Jr., Sioux City, IA) walked. Alexa Rudeen (Fr., Sioux City, IA) followed with a single, and the next hitter, Mel Johnson (So., Sioux Falls), doubled, putting USD up 1-0. The Coyotes added a run in the second inning as Dani Bahlmann (Jr., Marshall, MN) scored on an error. UND cut the lead to 2-1, but in the third inning, Michelle Jones (Jr., Rapid City) doubled home Rachel Fricke (Jr., Monroe, NE), who had doubled with two out in the inning. North Dakota cut the lead to 3-2 with a run in the bottom of the third, but the Coyotes would answer in the fifth. Fricke reached on a fielder's choice, and Michelle Jones followed with a single. Bahlmann doubled, scoring Fricke and putting USD up 4-2. North Dakota answered with two runs in the fifth to tie the game at 4-4. USD went up 5-4 when Johnson homered to center in the sixth. However, USD was unable to hold its lead as North Dakota scored twice in the seventh. Johnson was 2-for-4 with two RBI to lead the Coyote offensive attack, while Michelle Jones was 3-for-4 with an RBI. Bahlmann was 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI as well for USD. Tagney Jones (Sr., Lincoln, NE), Roan, Rudeen and Fricke also had hits for USD. Brittany Donohue (Jr., St. Paul, MN) took the loss in relief for USD. She allowed 2 runs in 2 1/3 innings, striking out three while walking six. Johnson started and received a no-decision after allowing four runs in 4 1/3 innings. Johnson struck out three and walked three. In the contest against UMKC, the Coyotes started a two-out rally in the first inning which produced three runs. With two out, Tagney Jones doubled, and she scored on Johnson's RBI single. The next batter, Alaina Novotny (So., Omaha, NE) followed with a double to score Johnson. Catcher Jessica Lussman (So., Storm Lake, IA) reached on an error, with Novotny scoring on the play, to help USD increase its lead to 3-0. UMKC scored a run in the second off of USD starter Cortney Heim (So., Plattsmouth, NE), but the Coyotes answered in the bottom of the frame as Rudeen singled with two out. Roan followed with a two-run homer to push the USD advantage to 5-1. The Kangaroos fought back in the third, as a Coyote error helped them score three unearned runs to help cut the USD lead to 5-4. UMKC tied the game at 5-5 in the fourth on Betsy Hanley's RBI single. The three-run third inning was part of six unanswered runs for UMKC, which built a 7-5 lead, thanks to single runs in the fifth and six innings. Tagney Jones led USD with a 2-for-2 effort at the plate. Roan was 1-for-4 with two RBI, while Novotny was 1-for-2 with an RBI. Johnson was 1-for-4 with an RBI, while Lussman and Rudeen had hits. Heim gave up seven runs in seven innings in taking the loss, but only four of the runs were earned. She struck out eight and walked four.
