Coyotes split with CSU-Dominguez Hills The University of South Dakota softball team split a doubleheader with California State University-Dominguez Hills on Monday in Carson, CA. CSUDH won the first game, 11-3 while the Coyotes prevailed in the second game, 10-6. USD (21-14) finished its California trip with a 1-4 mark. Amber Angel hit a pair of three-run homers to spark the CSUDH offense in the Toros' Game 1 win. The Coyotes built a 1-0 lead in the top of the second as Mel Johnson (So., Sioux Falls) homered to lead off the inning. Angel hit her first home run in the second inning off of USD starter Cortney Heim (So., Plattsmouth, NE). That was part of a six-run second inning which saw the Toros build a 6-1 lead. USD answered with two runs in the third to cut the lead to 6-3. Jessica Lussman (So., Storm Lake, IA) led off with a walk, and advanced to second on a passed ball. One out later, Tagney Jones (Sr., Lincoln, NE) singled to right to score Lussman with USD's second run. Later in the inning, Callie Roan (Jr., Sioux City, IA), who had reached on a fielder's choice, scored on a wild pitch to bring the Coyotes within 6-3. However, the Coyotes could get no closer. In the sixth, Angel hit her second three-run homer to clinch the game for the Toros (31-15). Jones, Alexa Rudeen (Fr., Sioux City, IA), Johnson, Alaina Novotny (So., Omaha, NE) and Michelle Jones (Jr., Rapid City) had hits for USD. Heim took the loss for USD, giving up 11 runs in 5 1/3 innings. She struck out two and walked four while allowing 11 hits. In Game 2, USD jumped out to an early 3-0 lead. Johnson led off by reaching on a walk, with Novotny following with a single. Two outs later, Jasey Goedeken (Jr., Columbus, NE) hit a three-run homer to center to put the Coyotes up 3-0. The Toros scored a run in the bottom of the second to cut the lead to 3-1. The Coyotes broke the game open with a big seven-run fourth inning. USD had the bases loaded with two out when Tagney Jones reached on an error, allowing Rachel Fricke (Jr., Monroe, NE) to score. The Coyotes capitalized on the error to score six more runs in the inning. Roan singled to drive in two runs, while Rudeen doubled to left to score two more. Johnson came up big again, drilling a two-run homer – her second homer of the day – to build the USD lead to 10-1. All seven runs that USD scored in the inning were unearned. Brittany Donohue (Jr., St. Paul, MN) got the win for USD, pitching 4 1/3 innings. She allowed four earned runs, striking out one while walking six. Johnson came in relief in the fifth. The Toros cut the Coyote lead to 10-6, but Johnson got Angel to ground out with two runners on in the seventh to preserve the win. Goedeken finished 2-for-4 with three RBI for USD. Novotny was 2-for-2, while Roan, Rudeen and Johnson each had a hit and two RBI. Jones, Fricke and Michelle Jones each had hits for USD. The Coyotes resume action at 4 p.m. on Friday, April 10 when they face North Dakota in Kansas City, Mo. The Coyotes will also play Missouri-Kansas City at 6 p.m. on Friday. The Coyotes will also face UND and UMKC on Saturday as well.
