DENR recognizes City of Vermillion Wastewater Treatment System The South Dakota Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) announced that the City of Vermillion's wastewater treatment system is the recipient of the 2008 Operation and Maintenance Excellence Awards. This award is for outstanding wastewater system operation and environmental compliance with its state surface water discharge permit for the past year. DENR is also recognizing the following certified wastewater operators for the excellent operation and maintenance of the City of Vermillion's wastewater system. Operators recognized are Superintendent Paul Brunick, Corey Moore, Fred Balleweg, John Walker and Brad Swee. The award was presented during the 2009 South Dakota Water and Wastewater Association Wastewater Operators Seminar held April l-2, at the Cedar Shores Resort in Oacoma. "Wastewater operators do it all — they maintain the sewer systems that collect and transport all your wastewater away from your home and business each and every day, they operate a wastewater treatment system that breaks down the wastes, and they make sure any discharge of treated wastewater is protective of human health and the environment," said DENR Secretary Steve Pirner. Qualifications for the Operation and Maintenance Excellence Award are based on a system's compliance with the state's environmental requirements, discharged water quality, monitoring reports, state inspections, and proper operation and maintenance of the wastewater treatment facility.
