Hunter captures shot put title at the Lennox Booster Club Qualifier By Parker Knox
Sportswriter Wyatt Hunter captured another shot put title, Cody Olson powered to a strong second-place finish in the 400-meter run, the VHS girls' medley team won their relay, and Morgan Erickson placed second in the 300-meter hurdles. Those were Vermillion's highlights as the Tanagers joined Parkston, Dakota Valley, Brandon Valley, Sioux Falls Lincoln and Lennox athletes at the Lennox Booster Club Qualifier last week. This weekend some of the Tanagers will tackle the season's toughest competition at the Howard Wood Dakota Relays in Sioux Falls. Hunter's winning distance in the shot put event was 50'5". The senior weight man also placed ninth in the discus at 117'40". Sophomore Will Mart was fifth in the discus at 126'4" and ninth in the shot at 39'2 1/2". Olson, only a sophomore, ran the 400 meters in :55.4 for his second-place medal. If team points had been kept, Carson Sullivan would have earned some for VHS in two events. He was sixth in the 800 in 2:26.7 and seventh in the 1600 in 5:04.0. Ryan Kost was sixth in the 110-meter hurdles in :18.1, and Andrew Kost placed eighth in the 300-meter hurdles in :49.3. Carrying Vermillion's colors to victory in the girls medley were Hannah Nehlich-Arobba, Karissa Martin, Sarah Day and Kayla Munger in 4:48.7. Relays are the VHS girls' strength this season as evidenced by the fact that Tanager quartets placed second only to Lincoln in the 4×100 in :54.6, in the 4×200 in 1:52.9 and in the 4×400 in 4:34.2. Erickson's second-place time in the long hurdles was :52.0. Carlee Sorensen placed seventh in the 100-meter hurdles in :18.3. Morgan Hower placed fourth and Jade Fostvedt fifth in the 3200-metr run in respective times of 13:31.0 and 14:01.0.
