Pulpit Reflections

Pulpit Reflections By Pastor Grossman The people of the United States today are in desperate need of a radical revolution in personal habits. If we are going to survive as the greatest nation on earth, we are going to have to do something that millions of our grandparents did, and yet that is virtually unheard of today. We are going to have to read the Bible regularly. People came from all over the world, many of them with virtually nothing but the clothes on their backs, and carved a great nation out of a wilderness that actually had fewer natural resources than either Africa or South America. Our ancestors did this unbelievable work with their eyes glued not on their hardships but on a better future because they knew and trusted the God who created and upholds the universe. They knew that the principles by which they lived were right and true principles, because those principles came right out of the world of the living God. Even men like Thomas Jefferson, who were not known for their religious commitment, read the Bible every day. The best way to read your Bible is by sitting down with your family after a meal and simply reading a chapter. This does several things. First it gets our families together in a quiet setting, something we all need. Second it provides us with knowledge and insight into the principles of God's forgiveness of sins as well as the moral laws that lead to happy and productive lives. Third, it does something that is extremely important to human beings living in a world they did not make, it allows us to "shut up, and listen to God," something that is at the heart of all true worship. Worship is our conversation with God, but if we know how to pray but not how to listen there is no real conversation. Think about it. Whenever there is a disaster, we all pray about it, but how much do we listen to the God whom we expect to hear our prayers? There are literally hundreds of benefits to be found when we listen to God's word. Want to have a good marriage and a happy wife. Love her "as Christ loved the Church and gave Himself for it" (Ephesians 5:25). Real husbandly love is self-sacrificing love. Want to be a happy married woman? Listen to this, "the heart of her husband safely trusts in her, she will do him good and not evil all her days" (Proverbs 31:11-12). Want to have happy, non-problem children? Remember this, "Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child, but the rod of correction will drive it far from him" Proverbs 22:16. Do you want to know how the world works, and why it works the way it does, read the Old Testament history. God is a hands-on ruler. You will never be able to fathom the evil that plagues humanity from within and is found in every human heart, unless you know the story of Jesus, not the manmade story, but the one that is in the Bible. Without the Bible, human beings are victims, lost in a dangerous world. With the Bible, not only the world, but what comes after death makes sense.
