This Week in Vermillion High School Girls Golf

This Week in Vermillion High School Girlâ??s Golf by Joe "MOJO" Reiser Hello folks, we have a couple of weeks of very competitive girls' high school golf to catch up on. Let's hit the links for some of the action. April 14 at The Bluffs in Vermillion saw both the Vermillion High Varsity and Junior Varsity deal out a punishing and decisive blow to their foes from Lennox. For the "V" town Varsity Kristin Schwasinger and Kelsey Osborne delivered a pair of 45s followed by a 47 from Laura Hansen, a 48 by Kelly Amundsen and a 50 by Kenzie Huska for a nine hole total of 185. The Lennox Varsity girls posted a total score of 219 which was actually third best score for the day. The second best score was delivered by the Vermillion JV, who posted a nine hole round of 199. Ellen Brown's 48 was closely followed by a pair of 49s by Lindsey Robinet and Sarah Hansen. Rounding out the JV scoring was Emily Van Den Hul with a 53 and Alison Heine coming in at 55. Also in the JV mix was the trio of Elly Miller, Brooke Schwasinger and Chelsea Gilbertson. The Lennox JV score was 237. Vermillion coach Kirk Hogen commented, "We have so much depth on our entire squad. We don't have one golfer that shoots lights out, but we do have a lot of girls who shoot good scores and that is our strength." On April 21 the "V" town girls headed for Hartford to clash with the West Central girls. Kristin Schwasinger fired a 44 followed by Laura Hansen's 47, Kelsey Osborne's 48, Kelly Amundson's 52 and Ellen Brown's 54 for a nine hole score of 191, which was 10 strokes better than West Central's score of 201.  The Vermillion JV bested West Central's JV by the score of 214 to 239. The trio of Lindsey Robinet, Alison Heine and Emily Van Den Hul all rolled in 53s for the JV. Emily Miller was next at 55 and Sarah Hansen rounded out the scoring at 59. April 24th at The Bluffs in Vermillion was the scene for the Vermillion Girls High School Invite. The "V" Town Varsity girls finished fourth with a score of 380 and the "V" Town JV finished in seventh place with an 18 hole score of 400. First place was taken home by Sioux Falls Christian who won in a one-hole playoff with Parkston. Both teams finished at 374 and that resulted in all 10 girls (five from each team) going off on the same hole and the lowest team total for the hole taking home the team title. I can only imaging that it was quite a sight seeing a flock of girls making their way down the fairway and ending up at the hole with a giant group of people standing around watching each and every putt. Wow!!! No pressure here….In my mind I can see Chevy Chase passing out as he followed  through on his stroke…. NANANANAaaaaaa.  Nicole Funck of Dakota Valley was medalist with an 18 hole score of 80. Funck won a 2 hole playoff over Kylie Gaughenbaugh, who also posted an 80 for her 18 holes. For The "V" Town swingers, Kelsey Osborne came in at 90 for 10 place in singles. Kristin Schwasinger notched a 93, followed by a 98 from Kelly Amundson, a 99 by Laura Hansen and a 102 by Kenzie Huska. "We only finished out of first place by six strokes. With a little more management of our games and the course we can be right in the mix at the top," offered veteran coach Hogen. Team totals for the Invite were 1) Sioux Falls Christian 374; 2) Parkston 374; 3) Dakota Valley 375; 4) Vermillion (Varsity) 380; 5) Dell Rapids 396; 6) Elk Point/ Jefferson 399; 7)Vermillion JV 400; 8) Wagner 401; 9)Canton 404; 10) West Central 411; 11) Madison 431; 12) Harrisburg 437; 13) Lennox 478. The next action for the "V" Town Girls will be at Madison on May 1. It's the Big 8 Conference meet. We will hope for a good showing and some May Day magic for our girls. On May 7 it's the Harrisburg Invite and May 8 a duel with the higher class Yankton at Yankton.  May 11 is the Region Tourney in Lennox with the State Tourney in Hartford on May 18 and 19. Well, there you have it. I know it's a little cool out there, but your home town high school girls are out there braving the elements to represent our great town. Let's keep a good thought as the month of May and the competition heats up. That's all for now, until next week "We will see you on the practice tee…and in my case from the ruff." Thanks a billion..MOJO
