Vermillion tracksters persevere By Parker Knox
Sportswriter Vermillion's tracksters were able to get their outdoor season started last week, and Coach Lenni Billberg called it "a great start." "We worked the kids pretty hard," Billberg said, "but they persevered from our first event to the last." The Tanagers competed first at the Elk Point-Jefferson Invitational where Wyatt Hunter's win in the discus and second in the shot put, setting personal records in both, and freshman Will Mart's third in the discus in his first-ever high school meet were two of the boys highlights. On the track the Tanagers placed in all relays in both boys and girls events except for one. Billberg said other highlights were Mike Oberle's third-place performance in the 300-meter hurdles, Kayla Munger's third in the 400 and blistering relay finishes by Sophie Nehlich-Arobba and Morgan Erickson. On Thursday VHS hosted its Athletic Booster Club meet. The girls' team placed third among seven schools while the boys placed fourth. Munger emerged victorious with a 1:06.10 winning time in the 400 and anchored the winning 1600-meter relay team home in 4:35.20. Ashley Brunick, Sophie Nehlich-Arobba and Morgan Erickson ran the earlier legs in that event. Four other girls' relay teams placed second as did Erickson in the 300-meter hurdles. On the boys' side Vermillion's best finishes were second-place medals for Hunter in both the shot and the discus, Oberle in the 300-meter hurdles, Ryan Kost in the 110-meter hurdles, Carson Sullivan in the 800 and the 3200-meter relay quartet.
