American Legion Post 1 to start season May 26 By Parker Knox
Sportswriter Less than 24 hours after the state high school baseball tournaments are played on Memorial Day, the American Legion baseball season will be in full swing at Prentis Park and elsewhere around the state. The Vermillion High School baseball roster will transform itself into the Post 1 roster in time for the opening games of the season Tuesday, May 26, against Sioux Falls Post 15 East. The twinbill starts at 5 p.m. at Prentis Park. A busy opening week for Post 1 will continue Wednesday with a 6 p.m. doubleheader at Sioux Falls West. The first week then concludes with a home game against Lennox at 5 p.m. Saturday, May 30, as part of Vermillion's Baseball Opening Day celebration. Vermillion's schedule includes the annual Lewis and Clark Classic held at Prentis Park as well as at Yankton and Hartington on June 5-7. Post 1 will also participate in a tournament at Winner later in June, returning there as the defending champion, as well as home-and-home series against Freeman, Alexandria, Elk Point, Harrisburg, Sioux Falls East and Yankton. The complete season's schedule can be found at www.post1baseball.com. The Post 1 ballclub is coming off a 20-16 season in 2008. Vermillion won three games at last year's regional tournament but lost two maddening one-run games to champion Elk Point, 5-4 in the second round and 17-16 in the championship game and thus missed a return to the state "B" tournament where Vermillion was seventh in 2007.
