Mary Kennedy Mary Wilma Kennedy, 96, of Vermillion, died Thursday, May 14, 2009 at Sanford Vermillion Care Center. Mary was born Jan. 18, 1913 in Paris, TN, to William Herndon and Laura Vick Pierce. She graduated from Sterling, KS, had three years of nursing training at Topeka, KS, and received her RN degree. She married James J. Kennedy at Bremerton, WA in 1943. They lived in Vermillion since 1946. James died Dec. 19, 1982. Mary worked as a public health nurse for the state of Kansas and an industrial nurse at Bremerton Navy Yard during World War II. She also worked at the USD Medical School as a microbiology tech. Mary was a member of Bergen Lutheran Church, Vermillion Rebekah Lodge, Vermillion Senior Citizens, and a vocalist for Grand Rebekah Lodge of South Dakota. Survivors include her daughter, Mary (Ken) Strassar of Cuchara, CO; son, Bill (Beverly) Kennedy of Vermillion; and six grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband and two sisters. Visitation was May 17 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Iverson-Siecke-Kober Funeral Home with family present. Rebekah service was held at 7 p.m. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. May 18 at Bergen Lutheran Church, rural Meckling with Rev. Ralph Egbert officiating.
