Sportswriter For Vermillion High School track and field athletes who haven't already qualified for the state meet, there is one more opportunity. That will come at the Region 4A meet in Elk Point next Thursday, May 21. There it takes a first- or second-place finish in any individual event or relay race or a surpassing of a qualifying time, height or distance to advance to Spearfish and Rapid City for the state Class "A" meet on May 29-30. Tanager athletes have to this point qualified in four events. Mike Oberle is there in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of :41.90, fifth-best in the state through last weekend, and Wyatt Hunter has made it with a shot put throw of 52'9 3/4", second-best as of the beginning of this week. Two VHS girls relay teams qualified through their performances at Yankton's First Dakota Relays last Thursday. The 800-meter team of Karissa Martin, Kayla Munger, Mariah Dodson and Sarah Day surpassed the qualification standard by placing third in 1:50.30, the fourth-best time in the state so far this season. The 1600-meter foursome of Munger, Morgan Erickson, Dodson and Day qualified with a fifth-place time of 4:12.50, second-best in "A" as of Monday. Vermillion's Cody Olson missed the state meet qualifying time in the 200-meter dash by .30 of a second when he placed seventh at Yankton in :23.80. Olson placed fourth in the 400 in :53.70. Oberle placed sixth in the 300-meter hurdles in :43.40, and Hunter was second in the shot at 50'4". The Tanagers' medley relay team of Preston Ellenbolt, D'Andre Fore, Aaron Ruhaak and Tanner Anderson earned sixth place in 4:01.40. In girls events at the Yankton meet, Christine Epping placed twice—fifth in the 100 in :13.30 and sixth in the 200 in :28.00, and Morgan Erickson was fifth in the 300-meter hurdles in :51.30. Two other VHS girls relay teams placed fourth. The 400-meter team of Martin, Dodson, Epping and Munger ran in :53.00, and the medley team of Martin, Epping, Day and Sophie Nehlich-Arobba ran in 4:35.20. Vermillion had a pair of champions in the Yankton meet's sophomore division. Will Mart won the discus in 123'9", and Carlee Sorenson won the 100-meter hurdles in :18.50. Mart was also third in the shot put at 41'3", and Sorenson was also fourth in the 300-meter hurdles in :55.20. Carson Sullivan placed twice in the sophomore division with a second in the 800 in 2:14.60 and a fourth in the 1600 in 4:57.80. VHS got a trio of thirds from Janani Ragathoman in the 100 in :13.96, Morgan Hower in the 200 in 12:56.10, and Ashley Brunick in the 1600 in 6:03.40.
