Tanager tennis has sweet victory at state By Parker Knox
Sportswriter Victories proved hard to come by for the Vermillion Tanager tennis team this spring, but one of the sweetest came at the end of the season for two of the VHS doubles players. Michael Walker and Steven Deal won their opening-round doubles match at the state tournament in Sioux Falls, scoring a 6-4, 4-6, 6-0 victory over the Matthew/Houska duo from Sturgis. Walker and Deal were the only Tanagers to win in their opening matches. They lost their second-round match against the Watertown team of Brandsrud/Johnson, 6-0, 6-1. At No. 1 doubles Tyler Kielman and A.J. Walker lost to Buse/Brown of Brandon Valley, 6-0, 6-0, and at No. 2 Jordan Robinson and Wes McBride fell to Ries/Cherry of Rapid City Central, 6-3, 6-1. Robinson lost his No. 1 singles opening match to Huron's Riley Hoistad, 6-1, 6-4. Kielman, after a first-round bye, lost to Dane Rasmussen, Aberdeen Central, 6-1, 6-0. A.J. Walker lost his match to Huron's Brien Osborn, 6-0, 6-0. Michael Walker's opening-round loss was to Madison's Thomas Birk, 6-0, 6-1. McBride lost to Ryan Shogren, Sioux Falls Roosevelt, 6-1, 6-0. Dylan Scheidel lost to Max Bordewyk of Madison, 6-4, 6-4.
