This Week in vermillion HS Girls Golf

This Week in vermillion HS Girls Golf by Joe "MOJO" Reiser Hello again readers, it's getting to the end of the season for the "VTown" High School Girls Golf Team. Some great things have happened in the past week for our local lady linksters. This week's competitions started with a May 7 trip to Harrisburg for the Harrisburg Invitational. On Friday the "Fraus of the Fairway" battled the weather and the class AA Yankton Gazelles at the Hillcrest Golf and Country Club in Yankton. As the new week started on Monday our classy class "A" girls would take home the first place trophy for winning the Region 2A Girls Golf title. We will start with a big congratulations to all the members of this year's team.  Monday, May 11 saw the "VTown" Girls head for the Lenkota Golf Course and post four of the top 10 scores for a total of 360 to blow away second place Dakota Valley and win the Region 2A title. Junior Kristin Schwasinger stroked a front nine 41 and back nine 44 for an 18 hole total of 85 and an individual third place finish. Laura Hansen (also a junior) was next in line, with a fourth place score of 88. Senior Kelsey Osborne rolled in a 92 to tie for sixth, while sophomore Kenzie Huska carded a 95 to round out the top 10. The fifth member of the team, Ellen Brown, also a sophomore, finished in a tie for 11th with a very respectable 96. "We had a good day and managed ourselves and the golf course, to put together a nice round," said veteran coach Kirk Hogen.  The "VTown" girls head for the State Tourney at Hartford on May 18-19 to challenge the course and rest of the class "A" co-eds for the State "A" title. Region 2A team scores were: 1) Vermillion 360. 2) Dakota Valley 372. 3) Sioux Falls Christian 405. 4) Canton 406. 5) EPJ 416. 6) Harrisburg 421. 7) Lennox 427. 8)Tea Area 429. 9)Beresford 463. Nicole Funck of Dakota Valley was low scorer with an 80. Thursday, May 7, at the Harrisburg Invite, the local ladies loopers landed in fourth place with a team total of 377. Kenzie Huska was low scorer for our girls of golf with an 18 hole score of 90, which was good for a seventh place tie. Ellen Brown posted a 94 to tie for 10th and Kelsey Osborne came in at 96 to tie for 15th place. Kristin Schwasinger and Laura Hansen rounded out the scoring with a pair of 97s. Lindsey Robinet came in at a solid 99. Low scorer for the Invite was Kylie Gaugenbaugh with an 18 hole score of 84. Team totals were: 1) SF Christian 369. 2) Dakota Valley 370. 3)Dell Rapids 374. 4)Vermillion 377. 5) EP-J 400. 6) Canton 402. 7) Tea Area 409. 8) Harrisburg 416. 9) Beresford 453. Wind, rain and nasty conditions greeted the "VTown" girls on Friday May 8 as they dueled Yankton in Yankton. The scores ballooned as Yankton posted a 390 to the Tanagers' 423. Megan Mingo of Yankton was low scorer with a 96. I will not be posting any scores out of respect for all the members of both teams. Just remember that there are times when Mother Nature is having a bad day and then we had all better bundle up and run for cover. I salute these competitors for braving the weather. Again, congratulations to Kristin Schwasinger, Ellen Brown, Kelsey Osborne, Laura Hansen, Lindsey Robinet, Kenzie Huska, Kelly Amundson, Allison Heine, Elly Miller, Sarah Hansen, Emily VanDenHal, Chelsea Gilbertson and Brooke Schwasinger. Your depth and commitment have won the Region 2A tourney and now we all offer our support as you head into the State "A" Tourney with the drive and desire to do your best and win a team title. Well, that's all for this week. With the lapse in time and a Tuesday deadline, it will be a while until I can report on the State Tourney. Until then, we will see you on the green and maybe even in the fairway. Thanks MOJO
